Being from Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican food is my favorite food. The food's taste is mouthwatering, and the simpleness is the exact opposite of French Food. French food is oh-so-sophisticated, but Puerto Rican food is simple and right to the point. The Great Gastronomy of Puerto Rico was brought by the Arawaks and Tainos from Africa. Although Puerto Rican cuisine has roots from Africa and Europe, it has a rich, unique blend. Let's have a look at some of the all-star dishes, shall we?
Let's start with the fritters. Fritters are the most famous Puerto Rican dishes. The Alcapurrias (Cassava Fritters) are fritters made from dough made from Yucca, and filled with meat. They are dipped in Mayo-ketchup, Puerto Rico's trademark sauce made from Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Garlic and a hint of lemon. Mayo-ketchup is known as Fry Sauce in the USA.
Another fritter is the Sorullitos (Corn Fritters). The Sorullitos are made from Cornmeal, Water, and salt. They, as well as the Alcapurrias, are accompanied by Mayo-ketchup.
Bolitas de queso ( Cheese Balls) are another fan-favorite. They are made of cheese, flour, egg, and bread crumbs, and are served along with other fritters mayo-ketchup.
The most famous fritters are the Tostones. They are made with unripe green plantain. They are twice fried in oil, and then salt is sprayed over the toston. They are served with Mayo-Ketchup or guava sauce.
One of the main dishes is the Arroz Mamposteao. The Arroz Mamposteao is a dish made with white rice and red kidney beans. It also has some and vegetables, and it is NOT served with mayo-ketchup. It is served as a side dish for chicken or other plates, but can also be eaten as a main dish.
Mofongo is a fried-plantain dish. It is typically made with fried green plantains mashed together in a pilon ( wooden mortar and pestle) with broth, garlic, olive oil. and pork cracklings. It can be filled with vegetables, chicken, crab, shrimp, lobster, or beef and is often served with fried meat and chicken broth soup. Mofongo relleno is Mofongo served with braised meat or sea food poured over it.
Tres Leches (Three Milks) is a traditional Puerto Rican sponge cake dessert made with three milks, as the name suggests. Evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream are used. It is served cold, and a meringue layer is spread on the top.
