Spanish cuisine is renowned around the globe. Tapas, Paella, and the Jamon Iberico are one of Spain's most iconic symbols. Spain is divided into Autonomous Communities, and as so, so is their cuisine. Tapas originate from the the north of Spain, in the community of Pais Vasco. However, you can find Tapas almost anywhere in Spain. The paella, too, originates from the Comunitat Valenciana (Valencian Community). Jamon Iberico comes from the south, and comes from the Black Iberian Pig. Really expensive ham, such as 5 Jotas ham. Other Hams include Jamon Serrano, which is still good but not as tasty as Jamon Iberico. Below is a picture of Jamon Iberico.
Jamon serrano is a type of ham mostly eaten in spain, and some parts of Portugal. Jamon serrano is mainly cured for 36-48 months and cured with salt. When A healthy baby pig is born, he is IMMEDIATELY fed on maize and Barley. he then feeds on grass and acorns. When close to slaughter time, they feed on only acorns for it to have a rich taste.
Small rations of typical snacks are called tapas, or pintxos. Pintxos are the word for pinchos, or skewers. These delicious treats consist of a piece of bread, a tapa (such as Chistorras, Croquettes, and Mini Hamburgers), and a skewer. You usually accompany these meals with Cañas (Draft Beer), or maybe a glass of cider. Spanish restaurants often use the skewers to count how many dishes the customer has ordered.
Another typical spanish dish is the paella. Paella is a typical Valencian rice dish which consists of different ingredients. All have main ingredients (rice, saffron, etc.), but each comes with a different type. My personal favorite is the Paella Valenciana, which consists of chicken, rabbit, green and white beans, snails, and it is ususally seasoned with saffron and rosemary. Other types of Paella, such as Arroz a Banda, which involves fish, or Paella de Marisco, which involves shellfish. They are usually eaten in family gatherings on Sundays, close to 2 pm. There are other types of Paellas, like the Arroz Negre (Black Rice), made with squid ink.
